Vote centers for upcoming September 9th school election

August 15, 2008

On July 1st, a new law went into effect allowing County Commissioners of Elections to create vote centers for school and city elections. The flood gave me an additional incentive to create vote centers when 11 poll sites were damaged by the flood (see previous blog post).

The biggest change in the number of poll sites will occur in the Cedar Rapids school district. We are going from 50 precinct poll sites to 20 vote centers. The advantage to voters? They can vote at any vote center within their school district.

School board elections are important for many reasons. For example, if you are concerned about pocketbook issues – remember that schools consume the largest portion of property tax dollars, i.e., from 55%-65% of your property taxes. And the citizens elected to school boards get to decide whether those taxes go up or down.

So if you’re driving to or from work, or to the grocery store, or to school, or going out to eat for lunch/dinner and see a Vote Here sign and you’re in your school district, then take a moment and go in and vote.   Click here to view the Vote Centers list.

Buildings used as poll sites and damaged by the Flood

August 13, 2008

On Monday, August 11th, KCRG-TV and WMT-Radio carried stories mentioning that poll sites were damaged by the Flood. I don’t believe any of the eleven damaged poll sites were named so I have listed them below.

We are actively scouting for alternate poll sites and/or working with the landlords of the flooded buildings to determine if any of the buildings will be available as poll sites for the September 9th school election and/or the November 4th general election.

We will publish a complete listing of poll sites being used for the school election once we have 100% confirmation on each site. The list will be published in The Gazette and other official newspapers, and hopefully by other media outlets.

What happened to my write-in vote?

August 8, 2008

I was sifting through my email today and found this pre-flood data I had intended to post after the June primary election….

Did you ever vote for a write-in candidate and wonder what happened to your write-in vote? I can tell you that your write-in vote is always counted, but showing you this data may convince you.

The table below accounts for the write-in votes in the races receiving the highest number of write-in votes. Why does this matter? If Mickey Mouse, who received one vote (see below), would have received a total of 134 votes for County Auditor on the Republican ballot, then Mickey Mouse could have become the Republican Party’s nominee for County Auditor assuming he/she was fully qualified and he/she completed an Affidavit of Candidacy.

My job is NOT to determine whether these write-in candidates are real or imagined – serious or humorous. My job is to count the votes … which is what we did.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

How many County employees are @ Westdale?

August 4, 2008

As of 2pm on July 31st, two hundred sixty-five (265) County employees are calling Westdale Mall their workplace. Linn County offices are occupying 11 storefronts containing 42,000 square feet of floor space.
