Linn County’s annual valuation report not ready

LINN COUNTY, IA – January 11, 2016 – Today, Linn County Auditor Joel D. Miller indicated his office’s annual valuation report is not ready and he cannot commit to when it will be ready.  Miller said, “I am sorry!  While there were some issues with the data we received from various sources being entered into the property tax system in early December, we resolved those issues in time for the property tax system/software to process the valuation report.  Unfortunately, the system purchased by the Board of Supervisors, maintained by the Board’s IT (information technology) department, and used by my office and the Treasurer CANNOT produce a valuation report that I can certify.  The mainframe system previously used to produce the valuation report was shut down more than a year ago and we are well beyond the point of being able to use a spreadsheet to perform the calculations needed to create a valuation report”.

Miller indicates, “A more detailed press release may be coming as soon as tomorrow; however, my message today is that the report is not ready and I am unwilling to commit to when it will be ready.  My advice to Linn County’s local taxing entities – and I am a former mayor of Robins – is to use the values we provided last year until we can provide you with the exact numbers for this year.  I am sorry for the inconvenience my delay is causing you and our taxpayers.”

The annual valuation report (AVR) is produced by county auditors’ offices throughout the State of Iowa.  Iowa law says AVRs are to be issued by county auditors no later than December 31st of each year.  Local taxing entities within any given county cannot fully determine their tax levies, annual budgets, or capital improvement plans without receiving the AVRs and knowing the taxable value of the properties within their jurisdictions.

Joel D. Miller assumed the duties of Linn County Auditor on 20 February 2007.  He was re-elected in 2008 and 2012.  He served on the Robins City Council from 2002-2007 as councilor (4 years) and mayor (2 years).  You can view his profile on LinkedIn .  ###
